Young. Black.Talented. Andrew Ayew is the son of Ghana’s football legend, Abedi Pele. When Andre came into soccer scene, many assumed that he was riding on his father’s fame but, after his brilliant performance at the 2009 U-20 World Cup, he earned bragging rights as a veritable soccer star. He currently plays for Marseille and is the father of a baby girl. We love him for being a laser striker, mature beyond his 23 year age.

Kevin Prince Boateng. Passionate. Skilled and strong willed.
The German born midfielder gained international renown when he made the controversial decision to play for Ghana instead of Germany during the 2010 World Cup. With his unbridled passion for sport and country on display, Ghana made it to the quarter finals. We love this tattoed stud for walking off the pitch when racist slurs we hurled at him during a game with an Italian team. He is not married.

Emmanuel Emenike’s prowess on the field has him on the radar of the notable European teams. He currently plays for Spartak Moscow but it is rumored that he is about to be nabbed by Liverpool or Chelsea. He is the lead scorer of the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, and without his striking performance in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria may not have won the cup. He earns about 12MM Euros a year. He is single.

In a sport dominated by West and North Africans, Victor Wanyama is a rarity.
The Kenyan is one of the few men from East Africa who are good at a non-track and field sport. He plays defense for the Scottish Premier League Celtic. Only 21 years old, his relationship status can only be assumed as ‘having fun’.

Alain Traore is the reason why Burkina Faso made it to finals at the 2013 AFCON. The 25 year-old FC Lorient striker strained his thigh when playing with Zambia, but he joined the team for the final match against Nigeria. Eventhough they failed to win the title, Traore’s fearless play sealed his reputation as one of best players in the tournament.

Demba Ba is a devout Muslim. Born in France to Senegalese parents. He is a striker for Chelsea and. We love him for his PDF ( public display of faith) as he celebrates his goals by dropping on his knees to recite a quick prayer to Allah. He also demonstrated his sense of humor in a recent addidas campaign where he and some of his team mates were painted blue to promote Chelsea’s new kit. He is a married and loves to shoot darts.
John Mikel Obi. The Nigerian midfielder used to play for MANU, but since 2006, he has been playing for Chelsea, earning approximately 23million Euros a year. Born on April 22nd 1987, the birthday boy is not married and is reputed to be seriously dating.

Yaya Toure, the Man City midfielder wowed fans with his ability to cover the pitch at break-neck speed. The Ivorian is from a strong islamic family and was once so poor he did not have enough to eat. Now he earns millions of dollars a year doing what he loves. He is also very married to a gorgeous woman called Gineba. We love him for his admission that he prefers ballads from Whitney Houston over rap.

Abdel Taarabt is catching a lot of flak for ducking from the ferocity of Shaun Maloney’s free-kick, but we love the Queens Park Rangers because he is a sight for sore eyes. He is originally from Morocco.

Sulley Muntari bleeds football, sweats football, LOVES football. The veteran Ghana Black Star midfielder also plays for Inter Milan. We love him for the charitable work that he does with his gorgeous wife, Menaye Donkor.

Colour has been upstaged as the fashion-must of 2013. The tres-chic way to now make an entrance is in a bold black and white block dress. The retro trend has been validated by Alicia Keys, Beyonce and, Kim kardashian. Sheath dresses in these bold colours are readily available in high-end designers and retail stores.

Fashion tip: Black and white block dress are so bold they require very little accessories. Resist the temptation to rock this look with black and white shoes, black and white earrings or a white and black handbag. Lean on the power of simplicity. Skip earrings and opt for a simple ring. Keep it clean and save a dash of colour for the lips.

My name is Amma and I have a problem: I am constantly turned on. By ‘turned on’ I mean exactly that: turned ON. The most embarrassing part of this issue is I simply can’t control it. It is an irresistible feeling that comes over me whether I am at work, on a beach, on a bus or having dinner with friends… the only way to appease this stirring is to reach for my toy – aka the iPhone, iPad or any other gadget iCan get my hands on and quickly log on to a social media site. As the colourful images of people pop onto the screen, my nerves simmer down like an addict who just got a shot of heroine.

This week, it dawned on me that this irrepressible need to be connected ON to social media is a disorder. Lets call it the social media deficient disorder because I honestly can’t go 30 minutes without clicking ON a link to find to out what is going ON in the world. It is the downside of a technologically evolved world which provides round-the-clock access to the internet so you can keep abreast with the mundane or the silly. I thirst for these updates. I have developed an insatiable desire to be entertained so I am ON Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and a myriad of blogs to find out what people are on to.

To ensure that I don’t miss anything, I subscribe to this genius called ‘notifications’ so anytime there is an update, I get a buzz. And let me tell you, I am constantly buzzing! One zzz is from texts, the next zzz is Whatsapp, the next tells me what people are wearing, what they saying, how they eating and who they doing. (loser I know) My fingers even have an arthritic bend from browsing on the phone but I still can’t stop. The first thing I do each morning is to check updates on social media. It is also the last thing I do before I sleep. My brain is turned ON all the time and I wish for a brief moment I could be turned off. Now I could promise you that I am going to try to stop. But lets be clear, I am an addict not a liar. And like any addiction, the first step to recovery is recognizing that you have a problem. In my case, I have a really, really big… oh wait… zzz

Many of us who pretend to write would not have had the courage if Achebe had not paved the way with classics like ‘Things Fall Apart’ ‘Arrow of God’ and ‘There once was a country’.

He was one of the first to point out the shamefully racist manner in which Africa is depicted in books and movies. He did so not to shame the world, but to push it to see Africa as a continent with a troubled past but a promising future. Through his teachings, Africans studying abroad could boldly challenge professors and editors who dared portray Africa a mass filled with primitive tribes.

We could tell them that if they had Shakespeare, we had Chinua Achebe! We were able to do so because he had given us permission in beautifully scripted books. I personally loved Chinua Achebe for his striking rebuttal to Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness which can be read on the link attached http://kirbyk.net/hod/image.of.africa.html

He is survived by his wife, four children and a bastion of grateful new writers.

Rest in perfect peace. In the words of Desmond Tutu, “God is proud of you”

At the core of Kenya’s election brouhaha are two mind-boggling questions: What to do with Kenyatta’s war crime charges and secondly, are Kikuyus the only people fit to be president of this multi-ethnic country.

For those who don’t know, Uhuru Kenyatta, son of the first president of Kenya, was declared winner of a contentious March 4th presidential elections. The results, however, are being challenged by the second runner-up, Raila Odinga, who alleges that the electoral commission fixed the outcome. Kenyatta’s camp insists that the election was free and fair, but they can’t be as dismissive about the Hague’s assertion that he orchestrated the mass killings that marred the 2007 election. Fatou Bensouda, chief prosecutor at the Hague is unwavering about her commitment to have Kenyatta and his cronies stand trial. He has vowed to fight the charges and clear his name.

How does the president of the most economically powerful country in East Africa subject himself to the rigorous examination of the International Criminal Court without losing his international credibility? Most importantly, how can he successfully govern a country bitterly divided along ethnic lines? Kenyatta is a Kikuyu, Raila Odinga is a Luo. Kikuyus are the dominant ethnic group in the nation of 39 million people. Although there other tribes like Kalenjin, Luo, Kamba and Maasai, since independence, every president, except for Arap Moi has been a Kikuyu. This has led to allegations that the country’s political and material wealth is disproportionately concentrated in the hands of Kikuyus – a sentiment that readily lends itself to violence during elections.

It is not entirely clear how Kenyatta who is at the centre of ethnic cleansing charges will unite the entire country. Amongst Kikuyus, he is regarded as a saviour, the rest of Kenya is waiting to see how he will heal the deep tribal wounds and move the country forward.

But if you want to be the 43rd richest billionaire in the world, you have to reign in your business acumen and dominate the essential commodities market in the entire West African region – enter Alhaji Aliko Dangote.

The 55-year old Dangote business man is estimated to be worth about 16.1billion dollars as of March 2013. Although he is from oil-rich Nigeria, Dangote made his money selling essential commodities like flour, sugar and cement. He is the only African to crack through the concrete ceiling of Forbes’ exclusive list which is dominated by white males from the US and Russia.

Dangote gives generously to poverty relief programs.
